Merchants have been working on this bridge for centuries. In the renaissance period, they used tables (Italian "banca") to display their goods on. When their business failed, their tables were broken (Italian "rumpere" -> ruptus) into pieces. Hence bank + rupt.
Also take a look at the corridor on top of the bridge, that was used by the Medici to stay away from the crowd when walking from their palace to the church. Beautiful scenery, but always very crowded.
